You may remember way back in April I wrote about some fascinating research showing kin-selection operating in the wild in slave ants, Temnothorax longispinosus. These ants were able to indirectly increase their fitness by attacking or neglecting the larvae of the slave-maker ants in whose nests they had been forcibly put to work. The authors of this study have since produced a cool video explaining their work and this has just won the National Evolutionary Synthesis Center (NESCent) Film Prize for 2013. It’s an excellent video and I’m sure you’ll agree well deserving of this award. The other entries for 2013 are not yet available online (I’m told they will be shortly) however you can browse the entries for 2011 and 2012 here.
